Frequently asked questions
Twenty answers, written the way we would say them at the desk. If yours is not here, write to office@firsthostel.ro.
What time can I check in and check out?
Check-in is from 14:00 and check-out is by 12:00. Because we are usually full, we can rarely offer early check-in or late check-out — but you are welcome to use the common areas, the kitchens and the showers before your bed is ready or after you have left it.
Where exactly is reception?
First Hostel occupies two buildings, back to back. The main address is Bulevardul Mărășești 86; reception is at Strada Bucur 21, directly behind it, and is open 8:00–24:00. They are a one-minute walk apart, and your booking confirmation always says which building your bed is in.
What happens if I arrive in the middle of the night?
Reception is open 8:00–24:00. On the evening of your arrival we email you the code for the front door and the code for your room, together with directions to your bed. It is sent before midnight, so you can let yourself in at any hour. If it has not arrived by 23:00, call us.
Is breakfast really included?
Yes, every day between 8:30 and 10:00, in the shared kitchens. It is a simple breakfast — nothing fancy, but enough to get you out the door.
Do you have a female-only dorm?
Yes — a ten-bed female-only room with its own bathroom. It is booked as a female room and we do not move guests in or out of it.
Do the rooms have private bathrooms?
A few do; most share. The booking page states it for each room. The shared bathrooms are cleaned several times a day.
Can I choose a bottom bunk?
You can ask, and we will do our best — most requests work out. We can only guarantee a specific bed for guests with a medical condition or disability that requires one, and we may ask for documentation.
How do I pay, and in what currency?
Cash or card, and in Romanian lei only — by law, payments in Romania cannot be made in euros. We accept Visa and Mastercard. If your reservation is unpaid, a payment link will reach you before arrival.
Is there a city tax?
Bucharest charges a local tax per guest per night, and it is settled at reception. Stop by the desk before you leave — it takes a minute.
Can I leave my luggage before check-in or after check-out?
Yes, free of charge until the end of the day, on the day you arrive or the day you leave. Collect it before the reception shift ends. If you need to leave a bag for longer than a day, it costs 35 lei per night.
Is there Wi-Fi, and does it reach the rooms?
Free Wi-Fi throughout the hostel, rooms included.
Are there lockers?
Lockers with keys in every room — take any free one. Use it for your documents, laptop and cash. A lost or damaged key costs €5 to replace.
Can I cook?
Four shared kitchens with stoves and ovens, open 24 hours. Clean up after yourself and label anything you leave in the fridge.
Can I smoke?
Not indoors — cigarettes, vapes and e-cigarettes are all prohibited inside. There is a designated area outside.
Can I bring a guest who is not staying here?
Only registered guests are allowed in the rooms. Visitors have to be approved by reception first. It is a safety rule and we apply it consistently.
Do you accept pets?
No, unfortunately. Assistance animals are a different matter — write to us before you book and we will sort it out.
Do I need to show ID at check-in?
Yes. Any photo ID works, and it is a legal requirement for accommodation in Romania. Your details are handled under our privacy policy and the photo is deleted after three months.
Is there an age limit?
Guests under 16 can only stay when accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Write to us beforehand so we can arrange the room properly.
Is the neighbourhood safe at night?
It is a quiet residential street ten minutes from Piața Unirii, and guests come and go at all hours. Use the usual city sense you would anywhere, and use the lockers.
Is it cheaper to book direct?
Usually, yes. Booking on our own engine costs us no commission, so the price is the same or better — and any change to your booking is a phone call to us rather than a form on someone else's website.
Still not sure about something?
